One thing we love about Quebec is the effortless blend between modern Canada and Old EuropeReally where else can you go shopping in Urban Outfitters, then walk the ancient stone ramparts of North America’s only walled city?

And if you want to really delve into the cool history of the region, then this month is the perfect time to visit. Quebec City is going back in time between the 6th and 10th of August for the SAQ New France Festival. Old Quebec will turn, for a short while, into New France so you can see how life was back in the 17th and 18th centuries. There will be concerts, parades, plays and, of course, a lot of local food and drinks for everybody to have a good time.

Urban Outfitters

But if you prefer to soak up the last rays of summer in the 21st century, then we suggest you hit up the beautiful Hilton Hotel rooftop pool. You can swim a few gentle laps before relaxing by the water with a panoramic view of the city.

When hunger strikes,  we recommend iX pour Bistro. It’s a chic, small restaurant in the suburbs of Quebec, but don’t let the distance deter you – visitors have voted this restaurant number one in Quebec city over and over again. Though you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, the scallops and steak are especially memorable.

Quebec brew

If you’re not too stuffed with gourmet food, head back into the city for a late-night drink in one of the many pubs on the Grande Allée Est. We love the industrial loft L’Inox, one of the city’s oldest microbrewries – where you’ll find a cold pint (brewed on site) and a large terrace perfect for people-watching the night away.
