Got the kids with you in NYC? Study our guide!

Sharing is caring!

New York is not just a cool vacation (or business travel destination) for adults. There are hundreds of fantastic things for kids and families to do in the Big Apple too – zoos, toyshops, Broadway, the Statue of Liberty. With such variety, the kids will never have the opportunity to say “we’re bored!”  The hardest part will be choosing your favourite activities, so we’ve helped you out with a few of the best to get you started:

Bronx Zoo – A New York institution, the Bronx Zoo is one of the largest metropolitan zoos in the world. With 107 hectares and over 6000 animals, you will need a full day to get the best experience – bring your walking shoes and plenty of patience. There is a Children’s Zoo where kids can get up close to touch and feed the animals, while feeding demonstrations, rides and animal information sessions will keep older kids (and adults) entertained.

FAO Schwarz – as FAO Schwarz says “every kid deserves to go to a toy store”. The toy store to end all toy stores, FAO Schwarz has been the delight of children (and source of hip pocket pain for parents) for years. Be sure to snap a picture on the famous keyboard and head down to the Make Your Own Muppet workshop to try your hand at the famous puppets.

Central Park – the iconic Central park is a must-see for all visitors to NYC, not just for the kids. Grab a ball or a Frisbee and have a picnic on the park, or check out some of the summer performances. You can walk or bike between the 21 playgrounds dotted through the park.

Baseball – head to Yankee Stadium, grab a hotdog and settle in for a game of baseball. Perhaps more for the older kids as the little ones may get restless or bored, this is a great way to spend the afternoon and who knows?  You may even catch the foul ball!

Statue of Liberty – the symbol of New York, kids young and old will delight in a trip to the Lady of Liberty where photo opportunities abound. The trip down the Hudson River is an added delight. The Junior Ranger program allows children to learn about Liberty Island, the National Park and why preservation is so important. All you need is a pencil and the booklet and kids can get involved anytime.

New York Aquarium – the oldest operating aquarium in the US, the NY Aquarium on the Coney Island boardwalk is jam-packed full of things to delight the kids. Visit the Sea Cliffs exhibit, the Sea Lion Aqua Theatre and conservation hall to find out how to save threatened and endangered marine species.

New York Hall of Science – you won’t find any “please do not touch” signs or velvet ropes here as kids are encouraged to touch everything in the name of scientific discovery. In addition to the educational exhibits, the museum offers a science playground so kids can learn while they play!
